Today I’m bringing a review that I’m super excited to write! It is going to be a review on Brightly Burning by Alexa Donne, a very highly anticipated book for me!
I received an ARC of this novel from Raincoast Books and I am so very grateful for it! My opinion has not been effected by receiving this ARC.
Let’s get into it!
Release Date: May 1st, 2018
Pages: 400 Pages
Publisher: HMH Books for Young Readers
Genre: YA, Sci-Fi, Retelling
Seventeen-year-old Stella Ainsley wants just one thing: to go somewhere—anywhere—else. Her home is a floundering spaceship that offers few prospects, having been orbiting an ice-encased Earth for two hundred years. When a private ship hires her as a governess, Stella jumps at the chance. The captain of the Rochester, nineteen-year-old Hugo Fairfax, is notorious throughout the fleet for being a moody recluse and a drunk. But with Stella he’s kind.
But the Rochester harbors secrets: Stella is certain someone is trying to kill Hugo, and the more she discovers, the more questions she has about his role in a conspiracy threatening the fleet.

This novel was one that I was anticipating ever since I received it, but I had other books to read before I was able to get to it, so the anticipation just built and built. I am so glad that it didn’t let me down!
I have recently been getting very into Sci-Fi novels and this was just another sci-fi novel that increased my love for space books even more.
The characters in this novel were all amazingly written and I loved each and everyone of them for the purpose they played in the novel. The protagonists and antagonists all fit in so well and I didn’t see a character that seemed out of place one bit.
Our main character, Stella, was a delight to read about and I definitely loved how relatable she was to a reader. It was easy to note that she was an independant woman who had strength as well as incredibly kindness. I really enjoyed seeing her growth throughout the novel and was sad to see her go at the end.
I also really loved the antagonists in this novel. They were the perfect amount of evil and cunning and it added so much drama to the novel that I was looking for.
The writing in this novel really drew you in as a reader and allowed you to never feel as though the novel was getting slow or there wasn’t anything going on. I managed to finish this book in a couple hours a couple days ago and I found that the time that it took me to finish it felt like nothing at all.
It was very easy to fall into the writing of this novel, the suspense was also incredibly written.
This novel is a Jane Eyre retelling, so there is a certain aspect of surprise that you won’t have if you’ve read Jane Eyre or if you know the plot of that novel at all. Despite that, I found myself still on the edge of my seat wondering what is going to happen next and what all the secrets are in the book.
This novel was so much more than just a Jane Eyre retelling, there was so much drama and the space element really changed the setting into something that allowed the reader to experience the novel wonderfully.
I thoroughly enjoyed the romance in this novel, my only con would be how quickly the romance occurred without much of a lead up. I wish there were some more plot points that would allow us as readers to become more comfortable with the pairing, before it happened.
All in all, this novel was such a fun trip. I believe it is a standalone which is a shame, but this novel ended perfectly without any questions left to be answered. Of course I would love another novel in this world, but I am content with this one.
I would definitely recommend that everyone pick this novel up when it comes out. It’s an amazing read and you will not regret it!
Alright everyone, that concludes my review for Brightly Burning by Alexa Donne!
