Seventeen-year-old Anouk envies the human world, where people known as Pretties lavish themselves in fast cars, high fashion, and have the freedom to fall in love. But Anouk can never have those things, because she is not really human. Enchanted from animal to human girl and forbidden to venture beyond her familiar Parisian prison, Anouk is a Beastie: destined for a life surrounded by dust bunnies and cinders serving Mada Vittora, the evil witch who spelled her into existence. That is, until one day she finds her mistress murdered in a pool of blood—and Anouk is accused of the crime.
Now, the world she always dreamed of is rife with danger. Pursued through Paris by the underground magical society known as the Haute, Anouk and her fellow Beasties only have three days to find the real killer before the spell keeping them human fades away. If they fail, they will lose the only lives they’ve ever known…but if they succeed, they could be more powerful than anyone ever bargained for.
From New York Times bestselling author Megan Shepherd, Grim Lovelies is an epic and glittering YA fantasy. Prepare to be spellbound by the world of Grim Lovelies, where secrets have been long buried, friends can become enemies, and everything—especially humanity—comes at a price.

I’m going to be honest with you all, when I read that this novel would have characters that were enchanted from animals into humans, I really didn’t know how I would like this novel. It just made me hold off a bit, but I am so glad that I ended up reading and ENJOYING this novel so very much.
The writing in this novel was absolutely magical. It was incredibly well written in a way to make the reader immersed in the story as well as create an magical atmosphere that really meshed well with the plot.
It was also amazing to see this novel be set in Paris. I have been wanting to visit Paris for a while now, so having the novel be set there gave me a delightful taste of Paris.
This novel was an absolute blast to read. It was a traditional adventure story that featured a fun cast of characters that had to break into a mansion and steal a spell. There were witches (which I loved) and so many different kinds of features that really made you fall into this world head first and never want to come out.
This novel also featured a ticking time bomb which I felt like definitely added to the readability of this novel. Being in a rush and having to beat a ticking clock made the book fly by without me even feeling as though I was reading. The pace was fast and I was stressed throughout the entire novel, but I didn’t care one bit.
As for the characters, I honestly fell in love with almost all of them. Anouk was obviously such an incredible character to follow. She grew and transformed so much throughout the entirety of this novel and it was definitely fun to see how she transitioned from being a slave who had no opinions or backbone, to the leader of this band of misfits fighting to stay human.
The other characters from this group were also a delight to read about. I loved Cricket and Luc and Hunter Black and yes even Viggo eventually. The only character I really didn’t love was Beau because of his controlling nature with Anouk. I understand it was to protect her, but dude back off!
All in all, I really loved the adventure this novel took me on. It was a delight to read and I am absolutely desperate for the sequel to come out already.
I definitely recommend picking up this novel if you’re looking for a fun and easy magical read filled with some fantastic characters and a really good time.
That concludes my review for Grim Lovelies by Megan Shepherd.
