Beginners Guide to Eating Keto

Hey everyone!

I know it has been forever since I posted on here, but quarantine and life just took control and I literally felt like doing nothing for the last couple months.

I am now in a place where I’m starting to get somewhat productive so I decided I would share my life changing experience eating keto!

Disclaimer: I am not a keto or weight loss or nutrition expert. This is just my experience and what I do. This doesn’t mean it is what everyone should do or what is clinically proven to be the best method to lose weight. Don’t come for me.

My Journey

I started eating a keto diet about a year ago and it has changed my life (and body) in so many amazing ways. Alongside keto, I also began to do intermittent fasting/OMAD (one meal a day). This is not something you have to do if you eat keto, but for me it helped me stay under my calories for the day. Also I never really ate breakfast and hated packing lunches for work, so it worked out great for me lol.

Since starting keto I have lost 60 lbs. A majority of that weight was lost in the first two months of eating keto, and then the rest was slowly lost afterwards. Keep in mind that I have not been strictly keto for the entire year. I would say I have been strictly keto for maybe 6 months over the past year.

That being said, every time I fell off the keto wagon, I always felt myself drawn back to it.

Reasons Why:

  • Increased energy
  • Feeling full off of less food
  • Weight loss (obviously)
  • More difficult to cheat (which meant that I didn’t)
  • Less thought going into meals
  • Less guilt (even though you should never feel guilty about food, if you eat unhealthy just move on and adjust)
  • Body felt healthier

Keto has this amazing effect on my body where it just makes me feel light and happy. I am always in a better mood when I eat keto and I never experience that gross feeling you get after eating a carb/sugar filled meal.

Another reason keto is a great starting point for someone who is beginning their weight loss journey is that when eating a ketogenic diet it is not necessary to intensely workout for you to lose heaps of weight. For me this was good because I needed to start small to really get myself to commit to my weight loss journey.

That being said, I definitely recommend starting to work out soon after starting keto because you want to make sure that you retain muscle on your body and don’t lose it alongside the fat you’re losing.

Tips to Getting Started

Measure yourself and take before pictures!
This one is not necessary but I think it’s something that everyone who is beginning their weight loss journey should be doing. Some days when the scale doesn’t move for a week or you think that you don’t look like you’ve lost weight, the measurements and photos will save you. It’s very easy to be discouraged when you think you’re not losing weight fast enough or it looks like you haven’t lost weight, but these photos and measurements show you the reality of your weight loss.

Calculate your macros.
This is something that will go alongside My Fitness Pal. Go onto this website and get the macros you’ll be following. Make sure you recalculate your macros at least every 10-15 pounds to ensure you adjust according to the weight you’re losing.

Download a calorie counting app.
The app I decided to download was My Fitness Pal. This app is one that I’ve used in the past so it was really easy for me to incorporate it into my every day life. Personally, I think this is the best app on the market for calorie counting. It makes adding in food super easy with its “scanner” function. It allows you to scan the barcode of the food you want to track and inputs it into the app seamlessly.

This app is amazing because it allows you to see how many macronutrients (carbs, fats, and proteins) you are eating and keeps count for you. It also allows you to input your water (if you want to keep track of it) and it has loads of recipes and workouts.

The way that I found myself using this app was to plan my meals for the day the night before. This way I would ensure I’m not going over my carbs whilst still making sure I’m hitting my caloric goal for the day. My fiancé made the mistake of having a breakfast full of carbs a couple times, which left him with no wiggle room for the rest of the day. So planning in advance can help you avoid mistakes like that.

Throw away all the carb filled foods in your house.
I was lucky because when I started eating keto my fiancé was also doing it with me, which meant I was able to actually throw away all the bad food in my house. That being said, I know a lot of you might be the only ones in the family who are eating keto and might not be able to do this, this is where self control will come in.

Load up your fridge with low carb essentials.
This is something that I found really vital to ensuring I didn’t break and eat something non-keto. If you don’t have your fridge stocked then you can make excuses as to why you can cheat just this one day.

I’ll post my essentials below!

Essentials I Always Stock

Obviously this list will be different for everyone but this is my list of foods that I absolutely have to have in my house at all times!

Fridge

  • Eggs (I eat so many eggs, so I buy the huge pack from Costco)
  • Bacon (always have to have bacon with my eggs)
  • Romaine Lettuce (love Caesar salad)
  • Cucumbers and Celery
  • Ranch
  • Caesar Dressing
  • Lunch meat
  • Mayonnaise
  • Mustard (regular yellow mustard)
  • Sugar-Free Ketchup (tastes juste like normal ketchup for me)
  • Salmon (if you’re a fan of it)
  • Chicken thighs (I’m not a huge fan of chicken breast but if you like that better then obviously get that)
  • Carbonated water (we have a soda stream, which changed our lives and now we also have less waste!)

Pantry

  • Liquid stevia (I literally couldn’t live without this)
  • Peanuts (best high calorie food for when you’re doing OMAD)
  • Cheese crisps (any brand you like)
  • Tuna (or any canned fish)
  • Stevia Flavour Boosters (I’ll go into more detail about these in a different post)
  • Almond Flour
  • Pork Rinds
  • Erythritol (or monk fruit)
  • Coffee (duh)

How to Stay Motivated

Keto is a lifestyle that isn’t the easiest to have when you’re social. If you’re new to keto it’s hard to distinguish what would have carbs and what wouldn’t, which makes eating at restaurants or events very difficult. Personally, I just ensured that everyone around me was aware that I was keto and that made it easier for me when I told them I didn’t want to have pizza for lunch or the cookies they brought to work.

Sometimes with a lifestyle like keto, staying motivated is super hard and something that you have to actively work towards. Here are some tricks that I’ve learned along the way.

Join the Keto Reddit Group!
There are two keto Reddit groups that I love, one is r/keto and the other is r/ketoprogress. I found these two groups saved me when I first began eating keto. The r/keto group is amazing for any questions that you might have or if you’re just struggling and need someone to relate to. I went to this group to sometimes just browse the topics, but you can also search your own concerns in this group and it is very likely someone else had the same concern. The people in this group are very knowledgable about the keto lifestyle and they are always willing to help if you need it!

The r/ketoprogress group is one that I still browse to this day. It is something that kept me going when I definitely felt like eating horribly or quitting keto altogether. It is incredible to go on this group and see what other people have accomplished whilst eating keto. To see the before and after pictures is very motivating to me and definitely makes me commit to keto more and more. You can also go on Instagram and search #ketoprogress to see more before and after pictures!

Have a Keto Buddy
Like I said, I was super lucky when I started keto because my fiancé was also doing it with me. This made it easier for me to stay on track because I had someone to vent to and someone who would motivate me to continue.

These days he isn’t eating keto anymore but I have a very strong foundation already that I don’t give into temptation as easily as I did at the beginning.

If you’re new to keto I definitely recommend asking someone in your life to do it with you, if no one is willing, message me on Instagram (@rimpysgetsfit) and I’ll be your buddy!

Look up Fun New Recipes
This is a great way to ensure you have variety in your meals and don’t get bored. Personally, I can eat the same things for two weeks straight and not get bored of it, but if you need different foods daily then I definitely recommend looking up some recipes!

I’ll be posting some of my favourite keto recipes on here soon so keep a lookout for that!

That concludes my Beginners Guide to Eating Keto. I hope this was helpful to you all, and I hope that you give keto a shot. Definitely give this blog a follow to be notified when I post some keto recipes and more tips and tricks to help keto stay fun for you!
